Made in America by a Mama: Alice + Ames

Stacie is truly living the American Dream! She works from home with her husband and business partner, Geoff, as they grow their business, Alice + Ames.  Alice + Ames designs classic and playful clothing that both you and your daughter will love. There are many things to admire about their brand, but one of our favorite thoughtful aspects is that they make their product here in America. We were super excited to get the opportunity to interview Stacie and learn more about her and their family business. Enjoy!

Tell me your kids names and ages.

We’ve got three girls; Ivy who is 6, Lola who is 4, and Frances who just turned 2 this last Valentines Day.

When did you found Alice + Ames and what inspired you to start your business?

Alice + Ames was founded in August of 2015. I’ve always loved the idea of owning a business and being my own boss, but it’s when I started having babies that I realized being able to work from home with them was the ultimate dream. We may not have a very traditional lifestyle--  but we wouldn’t want it any other way. Sure there are days that being self-employed and/or working from home can be challenging, but we feel so lucky that we’re able to spend so much time together as a family, it’d be crazy to actually complain about anything!

Why was it important to you to manufacture in the U.S. / locally?

It was crucial for us to keep production in the U.S. for not just ethical reasons, but from a logistical standpoint as well. Being able to call or text with any questions, the ability to drop in and see how things were going, and having quick turn-around times were all really important to us. On top of that, we have really conscious customers who like us, value U.S. made products and believe in quality over quantity. We may live in a fast fashion world, but there are still people who care about where and how their things are made. We love that we can tell them that our pieces are made right here in America.

Tell us about your manufacturer. What is that relationship like for you?

We have really great relationships with the people we regularly work with, and I credit that to the fact that they’re relatively close and we’re able to see or speak to them often. About once a week I chat on the phone with our head of production as I walk around the neighborhood. Sometimes we talk about production-- sometimes not. So you could say we get along just fine. :) We’ve heard lots of horror stories when it comes to working with different sewing contractors, so we feel really lucky that we haven’t experienced any bad experiences so far.

We have been fans of your brand for a while and were so excited to see that your husband was able to quit his day job and join you full time! How has it been getting to work side by side from home? Favorite part? Most difficult part?

I hate to even answer this in fear of jinxing it, but working with Geoff all day is the best. We’re pretty compatible and have very clear business roles, so it’s been smooth sailing together so far. He’s a pretty hard guy to get sick of, so I’d say the most difficult part of working side by side would be avoiding distractions together that delay our work load. Home projects, a quick lunch with friends, last night’s episode of “This Is Us”, all these kinds of things seem to sneak into our day every so often, and then we have to play catch up till midnight to make up for it! One day we’ll learn.

What is the best advice you have for other mothers and business owners?

Any advice I have is cheesy and cliche and has been given a million times before, but for good reason! So here I go: Go for it! If you can dream it, you can do it! Don’t ever be too hard on yourself. Don’t compare yourself to anyone. Don’t overthink it. Be yourself. Ask for advice from people who inspire you (and actually listen to it!). Don’t give up. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Have fun with it. Be nice to people. YOU’VE GOT THIS!

Quote you try to live by:

“Work hard and be nice to people.”

Tell me about what Alice and Ames has in store for us this summer? What are you most excited about?

We have a few new styles coming out later this Spring + Summer that I’m really excited about! I like surprises so I don’t want to say too much, but know that it will be good! And little. ;)
