Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background?
I was born and raised in Kingwood, Texas-- a suburban area northeast of Houston. My siblings and I would spend our summers out at my grandparents lake house in British Columbia, Canada. This is where I developed a strong love for all things outdoors, gardening, and the beauty of the mountains. I moved to Utah for University where I fell in love, and married my husband, Taylor. I graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Clinical Psychology. I had great plans to further my education... until we find out I was pregnant with our first child. Plans quickly changed! We were equally excited as we were shocked (terrified really) to begin this new chapter as parents. We had our first perfect little boy, and after Taylor graduated from BYU we headed north, planting our roots in Draper, UT. We have been here ever since!
When did you found Made by Mary and what inspired you to start your business?
It was the perfect storm. Money was tight, I was a stay-at-home mom with a 9 month old little boy, and the English/Korean job I had just wasn’t cutting it. I had a growing itch to start something, and after a special necklace of mine broke, the idea clicked. I needed to learn how to make jewelry. I grew up with a Father who was an entrepreneur at heart, and a hard worker. He always had a project or business on the side to keep busy. He had started his first business at age 19, and over the years that had branched into new opportunities and more businesses. Years later, I’m seeing the impact his hard work and confidence to try new things has had on me. Little money, inspiring entrepreneurs, and a desperation to overcome anxiety/post-partum depression was the combination I needed to get STARTED. I researched and self-taught for months until I felt like I had created a product I loved, and that others would love and feel connected to. I launched Made by Mary in May 2013.
Why was it important to you to manufacture in the U.S. / Locally?
There is so much meaning in the jewelry we create. On the surface, they are beautiful additions to an outfit or occasion, but to the wearer, they have depth. They hold special stories, memories, relationships, and moments the wearer can take with them wherever they go. It’s important to me that the process and quality reflect that. We hand-make each piece with raw materials sourced here in the USA. Our new studio here in Draper has been a game-changer for productivity and a seamless assembly line. Every piece we send out is checked, and re-checked, by 4-5 team members. I love having it in-house so that Made by Mary can help create local jobs, and build a strong sense of community.
Tell us about what your relationship with your manufacturer looks like.
We manufacture every piece in-house, here in Draper UT. I will frequently look over pieces going out and make sure they are all up to my standard so every customer is getting beautiful work and craftsmanship.
What is the best advice you have for other mothers and business owners ?
As repetitive as it might sound- stay true to who you are, and pursue your passions. If you do, at the end of the day you will fall in love with your work over, and over again. Don’t waste your time on things that aren’t important to you.For me, being in business for four years now, the seasons change. Sometimes I need to give more of myself to the business and work longer hours to get to a place where I can work less and be with my children more. Get your priorities right, and everything will fall into place. You do what you feel good with, and know that will look/be different for everyone.
Tell us one thing your followers would be surprised to learn about you?
I am entirely self-taught in the jewelry industry. It took months of research and learning basics from youtube (seriously!) but it’s been so neat to look back and know that it all began from the ground up.
Tell me about what Made by Mary has in store for us this summer? What are you most excited about?
We’ve had a lot of growth in the last couple months so we are trying to get a handle on that. We are launching something new this summer we are really excited about. It’s been in the works for over a year, and I cannot wait!
