Made in America by a Mama: Modern Piggy

Made in America by a Mama: Modern Piggy

This week we are lucky enough to have not only one Mama to feature, but two! Becky Young and Camille Lewis are the co-owners and founders of the sweetest little bow company, called Modern Piggy. We love their story of turning a friendship into a growing business and we especially love their decision to make all their products locally. Read below to find out more about this dynamic duo and how they make it all work. :)

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background?

Camille and I are friends and neighbors. For years we have shown up to events in the same outfits, eaten at the same restaurants or shopped at the same stores within minutes of each other, among many other random and funny coincidences. We both even graduated from Brigham Young University’s Marriott School of Business on the exact same day, although we didn’t know each other at the time. We both love design, photography and really are inspired by small business. And of course, we both love Diet Coke!

When did you found Modern Piggy and what inspired you to start your business?

Modern Piggy was started in November of 2015. I had invited Camille and her family over for dinner one night and we got talking about how we were both wanting to start a bow business. I had already created a website and picked out a name and Camille had already bought fabrics and leather and started designing the bows. We thought it was so funny that we were both working on a new company without the other person knowing. We decided right then to join together and start the business together. Our talents and expertise really complement each other and within 2 weeks we launched Modern Piggy just in time for the Holiday rush. It was a crazy couple weeks!

Why was it important to you to manufacture in the U.S. / Locally?

From the very beginning one of our goals with Modern Piggy was to bless the lives of those around us. Whether it was our own immediate family or other people in our life. We’ve found that by hiring local moms we are able to achieve that goal. All of the women on our team are moms who wanted to earn extra money for their families while still having a flexible schedule to be available for their children when needed. We love being able to offer that to the very talented women on our team!

Tell us about what your relationship with your manufacturer looks like.

Like I said, all of the women that help manufacture our bows are very talented and we have a great working relationship with them. We like to think of Modern Piggy as a family and we are so grateful for each person on our team.

What is the best advice you have for other mothers and business owners ?

You are doing better than you think you are! There are so many things required of you as a mother and it’s really easy to get down on yourself for not being able to do it all. Don’t be afraid to simplify, ask for help and hire out tasks to focus on the most important things in your life and the things that inspire you the most.

Tell me about what Modern Piggy has in store for us this summer? What are you most excited about?

We’ve got some collaborations with a few bloggers that we are really excited about. It’s always fun to work with someone else and create a collection you would have never thought of on your own. We are also working on manufacturing and releasing our second dress collection. And our biggest summer plans include new babies for both Camille and I in August! It’s going to be a good summer!
